The air and water turbulence cools the smoke pleasantly and undergoes an initial filtering. The recycle function ensures unclouded taste.

The bong water is drawn through the tube into a second chamber and then flows back into the main chamber.

During the backflow, the water is repeatedly enriched with fresh oxygen, i.e. it is recycled. Undesirable by-products of the smoke settle on the bong wall.
